For the last decade, Atkins has helped the Federal Emergency Management Agency transform its flood maps into more accurate, user-friendly, and easily accessible digital maps as an integral part of FEMA’s Map Modernization program.

To leverage the successes of the program and further enhance the usability and value of flood hazard mapping, FEMA developed the Risk MAP (Mapping Assessment and Planning) Program strategy. Risk MAP combines flood hazard mapping, risk assessment tools, and mitigation planning into a cohesive process that inspires communities to take action, thereby creating a flood-savvy nation.

Atkins is managing partner of the Strategic Alliance for Risk Reduction Joint Venture, which provides engineering and technical services to FEMA Regions I, V, VII, and X. STARR supports FEMA’s primary goal: to collaborate with state, local, and tribal entities to compile quality data, increase public awareness, and promote mitigation actions that reduce risk to life and property.
